Despite intensive recruitment campaigns to diversify the green energy workforce, females remain heavily under-represented in core engineering, marine operations, and technical roles within the UK’s offshore wind and marine renewable energy sector. There is an even wider disparity in offshore marine operations; female marine vessel masters and chief offshore engineers account for just 4.2% of the UK total. Furthermore, senior executive boards and offshore installation management within renewable energy multinationals remain male-dominated. The demand for flexible working or predictable schedules, often sought by those balancing primary caregiving responsibilities, is extremely difficult to accommodate in offshore roles, leading to a higher concentration of women in part-time onshore positions. Consequently, the average gender pay gap across the UK offshore renewable energy sector stands at 26%.
While the UK labor market as a whole has seen significant growth in female economic participation and educational attainment, hourly pay disparities in highly technical maritime and energy engineering fields have proved stubborn, showing very little change over the last decade.
