The UK's largest rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging network operator by market share is planning to expand into five continental European markets through a £680m merger. VoltCharge announced that it has agreed to merge with EuroVolt, which operates 90 premium charging parks across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Germany. The deal is structured as a merger of equals, although VoltCharge's UK charging network generates significantly higher revenues than its European partner. The planned expansion follows a 2.1% decline in total revenues earned by UK-based public charging networks in the previous fiscal year.
Recently, VoltCharge was ordered by competition regulators to divest three prime charging stations following its acquisition of the ZipCharge brand. This regulatory intervention highlighted the difficulty of securing further market growth in its increasingly saturated domestic market, driving the strategic decision to target international expansion.
VoltCharge's main domestic competitors have also expanded internationally, with rival operator ElectronHub operating in six European countries, while US-owned GridFlow has established extensive charging hubs across several nations in Asia and Scandinavia.
VoltCharge was forced to divest charging hubs in three major cities after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) concluded that its acquisition of ZipCharge would lead to a substantial lessening of competition and higher charging tariffs for electric vehicle drivers in Leeds, Leicester, and Sheffield. While VoltCharge stations tend to occupy spacious, motorway-adjacent locations with coffee shops and extensive retail spaces, ZipCharge hubs are smaller, premium city-centre spaces focusing on rapid, high-turnover urban charging.
The CMA ruled that the acquisition left local drivers with very limited alternatives in these target urban areas, giving VoltCharge excessive market power to raise subscription fees and per-kWh rates.
