Extract H: Costa Rica's absolute advantage in premium organic pineapples

In Europe, a substantial portion of premium pineapples are imported from greenhouse operations or highly irrigated intensive farms. However, a rapidly growing share is sourced from Costa Rica. Dedicated cargo vessels and regular air routes depart from Costa Rican ports and airports to major international logistics hubs, carrying fresh organic pineapples.

Costa Rica’s agricultural sector enjoys significant natural advantages over European domestic growers or high-altitude producers: rich volcanic soils, consistent tropical microclimates with year-round warm temperatures, and high annual rainfall that minimizes the need for costly artificial irrigation. Combined with lower agricultural labor costs, Costa Rica possesses a year-round absolute advantage in premium pineapple production. Switzerland, on the other hand, possesses clear cost and technology advantages in high-precision engineering, specifically medical devices and precision machinery, rather than raw agricultural cultivation.

Organic pineapples have become one of Costa Rica's fastest-growing agricultural exports, contributing approximately 1.2% of national GDP. This sub-sector is a crucial source of rural employment, providing direct livelihoods for over 90,000 smallholder farmers and supporting an estimated 1.5 million people across domestic transport, processing, and shipping supply chains.

Question

Using the example of organic pineapples (Extract H) and the Production Possibility Frontiers (PPFs) diagram provided, discuss how the concept of absolute advantage may lead to economic growth in Costa Rica. Use numerical or diagrammatic analysis in your answer.
