Question 20

Extract C

The environmental impact of cloud-based video gaming

The carbon footprint generated by actively streaming 10 hours of high-performance cloud gaming is equivalent to driving a standard petrol car for 15 miles. Unlike traditional console gaming where processing is local, cloud gaming relies on continuous high-speed data transmission from massive, energy-intensive datacentres equipped with high-heat graphic processing units (GPUs). This process requires immense quantities of electricity, much of which is still generated from fossil fuels, contributing to rising global CO2 emissions.

In a global marketplace dominated by a handful of multinational technology conglomerates, direct domestic regulation is highly challenging. Potential government interventions could range from implementing carbon taxation on digital service traffic, enforcing strict energy-efficiency standards on streaming servers and client devices, supporting the transition to renewable-powered datacentres, to launching public awareness campaigns pointing out the ecological costs of digital consumption.
