Mass spectrum of propanone with peaks at m/z 15, 43, and 58, showing the base peak, molecular ion, and fragmentation to CH3CO+

A mass spectrum plots relative abundance against the mass-to-charge ratio m/zm/zm/z. In most A-Level organic spectra the ions carry charge +1+1+1, so the m/zm/zm/z value is usually numerically equal to the ion's relative mass.
