Method:

  • Pipette a 15.0 cm315.0\text{ cm}^315.0 cm3 sample of the disinfectant into a volumetric flask and make it up to 250 cm3250\text{ cm}^3250 cm3 with distilled water.

  • Add excess potassium iodide solution to the flask, which reacts to form a brown triiodide/iodine solution containing I2(aq)\text{I}_2\text{(aq)}I2​(aq).
  • Titrate the mixture with 0.0500 mol dm−30.0500\text{ mol dm}^{-3}0.0500 mol dm−3 sodium thiosulfate solution (Na2S2O3\text{Na}_2\text{S}_2\text{O}_3Na2​S2​O3​) from a burette until the brown colour completely fades to a colourless solution containing I−(aq)\text{I}^-\text{(aq)}I−(aq).

The chemist requires a mean titre of 24.60 cm324.60\text{ cm}^324.60 cm3 of the sodium thiosulfate solution.

The density of the original disinfectant formulation is 1.12 g cm−31.12\text{ g cm}^{-3}1.12 g cm−3.
