Why chemists use pH
Why chemists use pH

Hydrogen ion concentrations in water span a huge range, from about 1 mol dm−31 \, \text{mol dm}^{-3}1mol dm−3 in very acidic solutions down to about 1×10−14 mol dm−31 \times 10^{-14} \, \text{mol dm}^{-3}1×10−14mol dm−3 in very alkaline ones. The pH scale compresses that awkward range into manageable numbers.
