Question 7

An investigation was carried out into the effect of light intensity on the concentrations of ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP) and glycerate 3-phosphate (GP) present in single-celled algae.

The algae were initially grown under constant, high light intensity. At t=2 minutest = 2\text{ minutes}t=2 minutes, the light was switched off completely. The concentrations of RuBP and GP were measured throughout the experiment.

The results are described below:

  • Before t=2 minutest = 2\text{ minutes}t=2 minutes, both RuBP and GP remain at stable, constant levels (GP is at 4.5 arbitrary units4.5\text{ arbitrary units}4.5 arbitrary units and RuBP is at 2.0 arbitrary units2.0\text{ arbitrary units}2.0 arbitrary units).
  • After the light is switched off (t>2 minutest > 2\text{ minutes}t>2 minutes), the concentration of GP increases rapidly to a higher level.
  • After the light is switched off (t>2 minutest > 2\text{ minutes}t>2 minutes), the concentration of RuBP decreases rapidly to a very low level.

Describe and explain the effect of switching off the light on the concentrations of GP and RuBP in the algae.
