Homeobox (Hox) genes are highly conserved sequences of DNA that play a pivotal role in controlling development in multicellular organisms.

For example, a loss-of-function mutation in the Ultrabithorax (Ubx) gene transforms the third thoracic segment (which normally bears halteres) into a duplicate second thoracic segment (which bears wings), resulting in a four-winged fly.

Suggest how Hox genes like Antennapedia and Ultrabithorax coordinate the specific development of segments and appendages along the anterior-posterior axis.
