Question 17

A conservation team investigated genetic diversity in two populations of the European larch, Larix decidua, in an alpine valley.

a.

In Population A, they analyzed 75 gene loci and found that 27 of them were polymorphic. Calculate the proportion of polymorphic gene loci in Population A. Give your answer to 2 significant figures.

b.

In Population B, they studied a needle-color variation controlled by a single gene with two alleles:

  • The allele for dark green needles (GGG) is dominant.
  • The allele for light green needles (ggg) is recessive.

The team recorded the following numbers in Population B:

  • Total number of trees with dark green needles (GG GG\,GG or GgGgGg) = 182
  • Total number of trees with light green needles (gggggg) = 18

Use the Hardy–Weinberg equations to estimate the proportion of heterozygous individuals in Population B:

p2+2pq+q2=1 p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1 p2+2pq+q2=1 p+q=1 p + q = 1 p+q=1

Give your answer to 2 decimal places.
