Question 1

A team of ecologists investigated genetic diversity in two distinct populations of the grove snail, Cepaea nemoralis.

a.

In Population A, they analyzed 80 gene loci and found that 34 of them were polymorphic. Calculate the proportion of polymorphic gene loci in Population A. Give your answer to 2 significant figures.

b.

In Population B, the ecologists studied a shell banding trait controlled by a single gene with two alleles:

  • The allele for unbanded shells (UUU) is dominant.
  • The allele for banded shells (uuu) is recessive.

The ecologists recorded the following frequencies in Population B:

  • Total number of snails with unbanded shells (UUUUUU or UuUuUu) = 455
  • Total number of snails with banded shells (uuuuuu) = 45

Use the Hardy–Weinberg equations to estimate the proportion of heterozygous individuals in Population B:

p2+2pq+q2=1 p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1 p2+2pq+q2=1 p+q=1 p + q = 1 p+q=1

Give your answer to 2 decimal places.
