This transport process is active and directly driven by the hydrolysis of ATP.

Scientists investigated the potential of a natural compound called Naringenin to reduce fructose absorption in the small intestine. Naringenin is known to inhibit the facilitated diffusion transporter GLUT5, which is responsible for transporting fructose across the apical membrane of intestinal epithelial cells.

The scientists fed a diet containing a high concentration of fructose to two groups of mice, A and B.

  • The mice in Group A were not given Naringenin (0 mg kg−10\text{ mg kg}^{-1}0 mg kg−1).
  • The mice in Group B were given 12 mg kg−112\text{ mg kg}^{-1}12 mg kg−1 Naringenin.

One hour after feeding, the scientists humanely sacrificed the mice, extracted the contents of their small intestines, and immediately determined their mass.

Their results are shown in Table 1.
