Structure of a cholinergic synapse

Annotated cholinergic synapse showing presynaptic neurone, synaptic vesicles, voltage-gated calcium channels, acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft, acetylcholinesterase, postsynaptic receptors, sodium entry and direction of transmission

A synapse is a junction where one neurone communicates with another cell across a tiny gap called the synaptic cleft. In a cholinergic synapse, the neurotransmitter released is acetylcholine, or ACh.
