What makes a cell prokaryotic?

Annotated prokaryotic bacterial cell showing capsule, murein cell wall, cell-surface membrane, cytoplasm, smaller ribosomes, single circular DNA loop, plasmids and flagellum

A prokaryotic cell is a cell with cytoplasm, but it has no nucleus and no membrane-bound organelles. Its DNA lies free in the cytoplasm, so its internal organisation is simpler than that of a eukaryotic cell.
