ATP, redox and the big picture

Flowchart of respiration showing glycolysis in the cytoplasm, anaerobic branches to lactate or ethanol plus carbon dioxide, and aerobic stages in the mitochondrion Respiration is the enzyme-controlled release of energy from respiratory substrates in cells, with energy transferred to ATP. Glucose is the usual substrate, but lipids and amino acids can also feed into respiration.
