In a study of a secluded population of the pocket mouse (Chaetodipus intermedius) inhabiting a volcanic lava flow, researchers found that 19% of the mice exhibited the melanic (dark-furred) phenotype. Melanism in these mice is controlled by a single gene, where the allele for dark fur ($M$) is completely dominant over the allele for light fur ($m$).
