Marine biologists investigated the species diversity of zooplankton communities across 8 different sampling stations in a deep-water fjord following an environmental remediation scheme. The index of diversity (ddd) for each station was calculated and recorded in the table below.

The team used the following formula to calculate the index of diversity (ddd):

where:

  • N N\,N is the total number of individual organisms of all species collected at a station,
  • n n\,n is the number of individuals of each individual species.

At some of these sampling stations, the recorded values were N=160N = 160N=160 and ∑n(n−1)=5300\sum n(n-1) = 5300∑n(n−1)=5300.
