Question 7

Scientists investigated whether a novel daily GLP-1/GIP receptor co-agonist treatment would result in type II diabetes remission compared to standard metformin therapy.

The scientists:

  • used a computer-generated randomized list to select 580 volunteers from multiple specialized metabolic clinics
  • selected volunteers aged 35 to 60 years, each diagnosed with type II diabetes within the last 3 years
  • divided the volunteers in the ratio 1 : 1 between experimental group A (co-agonist treatment) and control group B (metformin therapy)
  • recorded outcomes after a 2-year duration.

The results are shown in the table below:

OutcomeGroup AGroup B
Percentage achieving diabetes remission48.3%12.1%
Percentage achieving body mass reduction ≥10%\ge 10\%≥10%32.4%4.5%
Percentage with body mass reduction ≥10%\ge 10\%≥10% achieving diabetes remission78.5%58.2%
Percentage with body mass stable or increased achieving diabetes remission3.1%1.4%

Calculate the difference in the number of volunteers between the two groups who achieved diabetes remission. Show your working.
