ATP: structure and role

ATP: structure and role

Labelled ATP molecule and cycle showing adenine, ribose, three phosphate groups, hydrolysis to ADP and inorganic phosphate, and resynthesis to ATP

Cells need energy for active transport, muscle contraction, protein synthesis and secretion. They do not usually power these reactions directly with glucose, but with ATP, an immediate energy-transfer molecule.

Step-by-step lessons covering AQA A Level Biology ATP for A Level Biology. Each lesson breaks down ATP, then works through exam-style questions in Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3 format. Build a strong foundation in cell biology and biochemistry early on, since later topics on genetics, ecology and physiology all draw on these core concepts.
